OHIO History and Traditions
Walking to class on the brick pathways of College Green, today's Bobcats take part in the 217-year shared history of Ohio University. Our foundation in academic excellence and dedication to access to education are interwoven. The third black man to graduate from college in the United States earned his bachelor's at OHIO, and in 1873, Margaret Boyd became OHIO's first female alumna. While our students now come from across America and around the world, they are connected to Ohio University through traditions that span the years, and that connection continues long after they stand in cap and gown beneath the Alumni Gateway for a photo after commencement.
