This is the walk who steps your retrace forever. This is a 9am class that'll change you forever. This is a 2am study session that you'll remember forever. This view is one you'll cherish forever. Let's hope that's temporary. But that is definitely forever. Your idea of a classroom, your idea of celebrations, even your idea of what a successful career might look like, will all change forever. And when you leave, fellow Bobcats will give you this nod, and this career push forever. This bond, this community, this place, this experience will all stay with you forever, forever can seem daunting from the outside. But once you're in Ohio University will forever be in you. And a part of you will forever be here at Ohio.
Hello, I'm Candace Pottenger, Ohio's Vice President for Enrollment. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students and alumni of this great place, I am thrilled to welcome you to Ohio Gateway Day. If you've had the chance to visit our campus, you know that one of the most iconic locations in Athens is the alumni gateway. Standing at the corner of beautiful college green, the Gateway connects our historic university to one of the nation's best small towns. You'll pass through those arches countless times as a student here. You'll always remember that walk along the Athens bricks and you'll become a part of our history. That is what makes Ohio University different. This isn't just a place where you'll spend four years and earn a degree. This is a community that will become a part of you the connections that you make. While you're here at Ohio. We'll be with you for life supporting your success forever. Ohio Gateway Day is about providing answers to all those questions you and your family may have had as you plan for college this fall, and helping you form new questions about what you want to get out of college, what you want to contribute, and how you want your college experience to change you. We want to prepare you to walk through that gateway and to join the Bobcat community. And of course, we know that the top of mine question has been whether and how in the wake of a pandemic there would be enough experience left in the college experience. While we can't promise that the pandemic will be gone by August, we absolutely can assure you that you will find a rich, engaging experience filled undergraduate education at Ohio this fall we're excited to welcome incoming students at Bob cat student orientation in June in person on campus always following public health guidance. Of course, Ohio students love their BSO experience. It's their first slice of real Bobcat life. And if your family prefers to stay home together until Welcome Week in August, we'll have great virtual BSO options available too. During BSO you'll collaborate with advisors to choose classes that puts you on the right track and meet your academic needs. The majority of our courses will be delivered face to face this fall in small class sizes with hybrid and online course formats available where needed to our faculty and staff are ready to maximize your classroom experience. One of the best parts of the undergraduate experience at Ohio takes place in our residence halls of course, and we're excited to help you move in this August, you'll find our halls are purposely designed a little smaller here to help you find and build community, you'll be able to choose a double room with a roommate or select into a single for a little more space to yourself. And our experts, student affairs, staff, and student leaders are ready to help you get connected, get involved and stay engaged with life at Ohio. And getting back to the alumni gateway. There's an important detail I didn't mention, there is no actual gate on the gateway, no lock and no door. It is always open. And many ways that's a reflection of who we are here at Ohio University. We promise to meet you where you are, and to prepare you for where you want to be. But we will also know that you will change us as much as we change you. We expect you to leave your mark on this place and we'll help you do it. Thursday, February 18, we celebrated the 217th birthday of this university and we will be here for another 217 years and beyond. We are forever evolving and growing open to innovative ideas and new thinking adaptive to this changing world. We're always looking forward and we are looking forward to welcoming you. So come join us the gate is open.
Hello Bobcats. My name is Dan Yates and I happily serve as the associate director for outreach and recruitment and undergraduate admissions here at Ohio University. First congratulations on being admitted to Ohio University. I'm also a proud to time alum of this beautiful institution and love to welcome new Bobcats into the family. I know this is an incredibly difficult time to be making A decision like attending Ohio University. But I know for me when I made that decision, that is something that I will keep with me for a lifetime, I will remember that decision forever. It is a fantastic decision that I made way back when I was in high school, and then attending the institution was one of the best decisions that I've definitely made. Over the next little bit of time that you have with me, I want to talk about your next steps in officially becoming a Bobcat. As you prepare to get ready for this first fall semester, we'll talk a little bit about financial aid receiving your comprehensive package when it comes to grants student loans scholarships, we'll talk about confirming your intent to enroll letting us know that you want us to save you a seat here in the fall. We're going to talk about learning communities, we're going to talk about orientation. And then finally, what other ways are you able to get connected with us over the next few months. To begin, let's talk about what you first want to do. Once you've made that decision that Ohio University will be your home next year, your next step will be to send in your housing deposit and confirm your intent to enroll from our housing website. It is a very, very easy process that you can get to from the housing self service portal, as you're making that decision. And as you're completing that housing contract or that commuter exemption form, you'll have a couple of different decisions to be making. As far as what meal plan you want to choose from, you have four different options as a first year student, I don't think you can go wrong with any of those options. It's just a matter of what you choose and what your appetite might be as you get started here at the university. I think it's important to note that if you decide to start with the traditional 14, which is the lowest meal plan, you can always work your way up as you work your way through the summer. And really refine those decisions as you're getting ready to get started. That deposit when it comes to submitting that is a refundable deposit of $200. As long as you let us know and undergraduate admissions by May 1, we can work with you to make sure that that deposit is returned to you. But we do hope that as you make that decision to attend Ohio, you really feel confident and comfortable in that decision. So if there's anything that we can do along the way to make sure that that is the case, please feel free to reach out to us and we will be more than happy to work with you. One of the things that I know a lot of students and families are wondering about especially as they're trying to make that decision to attend Ohio is financial aid is that overall cost of attending university, Ohio University is really committed to making sure that the cost of attending university is as predictable and as transparent as possible. We're going to do that in a couple of different ways. First, you'll probably have heard of the Ohio guaranteed plus. So the Ohio guarantee plus really has three different pillars of first is a fixed rate tuition and fee table that as you get started here as a student that tuition fees will be wrought locked in for you for 12 consecutive semesters or four years. The second pillar two that Ohio guarantee plus is a shared commitment to an on time on planning graduation, we want to make sure as you get started here at the university as a Bobcat that you know what that path looks like to graduation. Last, but certainly not least, is extended benefits to lifelong Bobcats. So while that may not be something you're thinking about currently, let me definitely tell you, as an alum of this institution, it's something that I've definitely looked back on, and have very much appreciated the assistance that I've been able to receive as a graduate of this institution. Another way that we definitely helped to make sure that the cost of attending the University is as predictable and transparent is through our scholarship offerings through the Ohio excellence awards. Some of you may have already received that initial scholarship package, which is fantastic. Some of you also might be waiting for that comprehensive package that might be coming from our financial aid office here in just the next couple of weeks. As you're preparing to figure out what the cost of attending the University is, once you receive that comprehensive package, you'll be able to see all of the offerings, financial aid wise that you're able to use from the institution. And like I mentioned, that will include some scholarship offerings that will include grants, student loans, any other institutional need anything financial aid wise that can come to you through the institution, you will be able to see on that comprehensive package. I know when you take a look, it might be overwhelming at first, but I encourage you to continue to take a look at that. And if you have questions reach out to our office and we are more than happy to help you through that decision process and maybe explain things a little bit clearer. So when it comes to housing, so that will be one of the next steps that you'll want to take with the housing contract and deposit as you get that submitted. You'll want to start thinking about maybe where you want to live on campus. That will not happen right when you submit that housing contract, or Housing and Residential Life staff will then send students that have submitted that contract by May 1, a date in which they're able to Select their specific room, that will happen in the middle of May. So as again, you're preparing, you're able to take a look at our website and really see the differences between not only the residence halls themselves and the residential greens, but maybe even the rooms very specifically, you can take a look at the configurations of the rooms, you can take a look at what is offered within the rooms, you can also see what learning communities might be available with each residence hall. Learning Communities are a fantastic way to make that transition from high school to Ohio University. When I first started here at Ohio, I joined a learning community that helped me tremendously with that big jump from graduating class of 350 to an incoming class here at Ohio University of roughly 3,500. I joined that learning community really to help with that transition and meet other first year students that are in my same position. Learning Communities here at the University are encouraged, you can find over 200 different options through our learning community website to see what might be relevant to you. Some learning communities are interest based, some are residential summer academic based. So I definitely would like you to take a look at the learning community website and see what community might be right for you. Learning Communities are not required, but definitely encouraged specifically as you're going through and if you find something that is right up your alley, when it comes to your major, we would love to have you as part of the learning community. If you do join a learning community, you automatically be scheduled for some coursework, that is really in line with what you need as a first year student. If you're coming in with transfer credit, not a problem, we have staff that will help you make sure that you're in the right courses. Even if you decide to join a learning community. One of the final steps that you will need to do to become a Bobcat is to register for Bobcat student orientation. Bobcat Student Orientation will happen throughout the month of June. This year, we are happy to announce that we will have both virtual and in person options. So depending on your schedule, depending on your comfort level, we will love for you to come to campus and experience Bobcat student orientation with other first year students. If you want to do it from the comfort of your own home, you're welcome to do that, you are able to schedule both of those options through our website. Now regardless, if you're deciding to do this in person, or virtually, we definitely want to make sure that you block off the entire day for a Bobcat, student student orientation. Ultimately, you'll leave that process or that experience with a schedule for your first day of class. So we want to make sure that you are well prepared, and you are participating in the entire Bobcat Student Orientation process through either that virtual platform or through the our in person experience here in Athens. As you're finally making that decision. There's a couple last pieces of information that I want to share. Make sure that once you complete your time within high school, or if you have any college credit, that you're sending those final transcripts to Ohio University, we'll be able to put those onto your file and make sure we're awarding credit was necessary, or making sure that that final high school transcript is on your account. So as you move forward at the university, you're able to move through the registration process with classes as easy as possible. Last, but again, certainly not least, we would love for you to continue to connect with us. We have virtual programs throughout the summer, we'll have hopefully some in person experiences as well. But if you have questions or additional things pop up, you're more than welcome to connect with our office here in undergraduate admissions. Or if you are looking to get involved with learning communities, or even connect with other Bobcats, I would encourage you to check out the official Ohio University class of 2025 Facebook page. There's a lot of wonderful students that are already on that site that are connecting with one another that are even becoming roommates. So as you progress through this process, know that we are here to help you out and know that as you're making that step to commit to Ohio University, submit that housing contract and deposit exploring learning communities taking a look at that comprehensive financial aid package and really making that ultimate decision that will last a lifetime. We would love to help you out along the way to become a Bobcat. Thanks.
